Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

unpaid phone bill (10 years old)

I just received an notice from a collection agency stating that I have an unpaid bill. When I called they stated that it was from 1997 and that they had just found me. This bill is from NJ. Where does that fall in the statue of limitations. Can they still try to collect this bill?

Re: unpaid phone bill (10 years old)

you are apparently in Florida, so I can not tell you anything about Florida law. In New Jersey, the longest statute of limitations which could apply is six years; if they have had no contact with you and you have made no payment or promise to pay for over six years, they are out of time and out of luck.

I suggest you tell them to explain why they are NOT out of time and barred by the statute of limitations. You should talk to a Florida lawyer. I suspect that the amount of the bill is not enough money to make that worthwhile, but I suggest you NOT just pay these folks. Get some advice.
