Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

I started the process of divorce (pro se). I had no idea that there was a time frame in which you had to do certain things (i.e. serve papers). I took a while because in retrospect, our marriage was never registered and I know that eventually I have to produce a marriage certificate, which I do not have. I have now received a letter of administrative dismissal and am lost as to what to do. Do file a request for reinstatement, do I even have to file since there is no marriage certificate or do I go to the court and explain the situation and let the court decide if anything needs to be filed? Also I have to submit paperwork prior to court....what paper work are they referring to?

Not sure what you mean by having the marriage "registered". Either you are married or you are not. If you did not have a valid marriage, there may be no need to get divorced. Assuming you are married, however, you will need to file the appropriate papers to get your divorce. It is complicated for the layman. Therefore, you should seek the services of an attorney.

Keep in mind that this advice is given based on the little bit of information that you have provided in your question. My advice may change based on other information. Further, no one can rely on advice from an attorney who has not been retained. You cannot rely on this advice because we have not personally met and you have not retained me as an attorney. If you have not already done so, you should immediately meet with a Family Law attorney for a full consultation before you take any further steps. You may feel free to call me at 856-546-8010 to discuss this matter in more detail. If you do so, mention Law Guru and your first one hour of time will be free. Good luck! Rob Gleaner
