stepparent adoption

can a contested adoption be won in NJ father signed birth certificate but was not around 5 years later when stepparent filed for adoption natural father contested. Is there still a posibility to win the adoption?

If the father has been absent for five years a Court is likely to find that he abandoned his parental rights; that the child has bonded with the stepfather and terminate the father's parental rights in a contested adtoption proceeding.
