Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Jersey

Are parents liable?

My daughter's friend borrowed her bike to ride home. After trying unsuccessfuly for 4 days to get the bike back we were informed on the 5th day that the bike had been stolen and their property had been burglarized numerous times. We learned that the bike had never been locked up but leaned up against the side of the home, 3 feet away from the garage and 15 feet away from the road clearly visible. The parents claim no responsibilty because they didn't know she had the bike to begin with. Are they not responsible for their daughter's negligence?

Re: Are parents liable?

yes they are. you should sue them insmall claims court. if you have homowners, it will probably cover the loss and you can make a claim. you deductible may be larger thatn the value, however. Did the police make a report?
