Legal Question in Immigration Law in New Jersey

Immigration lost my file.

I have been a permanent resident for well over 6 years and have been waiting on my green card for just as long. My parents who filed at the same time I did received their green cards 3 years ago, but mine has never shown up. Almost a year ago I had my passport stamp with an I-551 which would serve as my temp. green card. I have been to the immigration office in Newark about 5 times asking why it still hasn't arrived in the time they said. Each time they typed some information on the computer then told me to wait six weeks. I have waited for over 8 months now and the last officer told me she would pull my file from some where. I would receive a letter in the mail with a new appointment within a month she said, but it has been well over a month and still no signs. I am starting to think they lost my file, what should I do? The waiting time is unbearable since it has been so many years for a card that I was suppose to receive in six weeks

Re: Immigration lost my file.

Clearly this might be an issue that can only be resolved by the immigration office in Newark, NJ since they already have a filed.

Re: Immigration lost my file.

Have you had an attorney help you or contact the local office? You do not state the basis for your green card application, so it is difficult to state why you haven't received the physical card in the mail yet. If you have been a permanent resident for over 6 years, you may be eligible to naturalize (become a US citizen) and the fact that you haven't received your green card would be moot.

You should consult with an attorney and provide him/her with details regarding your initial application for permanent residence as well as what has happened at the USCIS since applying. He/she will be able to advise you regarding how you should proceed.
