What car had expired: permanent one or conditional valid for two years?

Did you file the application on time (if it's a conditional green card)?

If a permanent card is expired, you are still in a valid status of a permanent resident. Card is an evidence of the status. However, expiration of the card by itself, without more, doesn't mean that a person lost status.
