Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

Hello,

A person who i'll refer to as Hillary was living in our home rent free for a period of about 2 years. During that time, Hillary's legal address never legally was transferred to our address and remained at another address. Hillary had clothes at our home and my mother who is the owner of the home threw out the clothes. My mother gave $400 in compensation to Hillary for doing so. Hillary is now claiming larceny has been committed and demands more money or to go to court. There was never a physical contract signed or agreed agreed too and no such rent was collected from Hillary. Remaining property was returned to Hillary so she did not lose 100 percent of all clothes. What is our rights as home owners because I think this issue needs to be settled in court legally.

While there may be civil liability, this is not a criminal matter. She was a guest and stays or goes at your pleasure.

The clothes were stored at the house for no compensation and remained after she moved. You are require to store them until they are picked up.
