Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I'm currently living in NJ and have been renting an illegal apartment since last March with a month to month lease that my landlord is trying to evict me from. The reason for this is due to the fact that I exercised my option to use my security deposit as rent, because she never gave me notice as to what bank it was in. Also after a small grease fire in my kitchen 2 months ago, I brought to the Fire Marshall's attention that there was no working smoke detector in my apt nor was there a fire extinguisher. Now she is evicting me and my court date is fast approaching. What is my recourse? Am I still entitled to moving expenses? I have been unemployed since June and have no money to move right now, nor do I have the extra money to retain an attorney. Any help would be appreciated.

Call me to discuss this. If the apartment is illegal, you may have a claim against the landlord for 6 months' rent. I would need to discuss this with you to determine whether that law applies to your situation.
