Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey
I am a tenant and I recently discovered (through an investigation by the utility company) that I have been paying for the electricity and heating in my landlords' garage for the past 7 months, where it looks like they operate an illegal dog kennel.
Unbeknownst to me, my unit was wired so that I would be billed for the energy usage in the garage, in addition to my own usage. After months of speculation and stress over my unusually high utility bills, I called the utility company for an investigation and they were able to verify the setup.
I have since vacated the apartment and would like to know what my options are at this point, in terms recovering what I’ve overpaid. The utility company says they remain neutral in these types of situations and the landlord has been unresponsive. Also, am I entitled to any other damages since I was very financially distressed throughout that entire period and I doubt I was the first tenant they’ve done this to?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
