Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey

assult victim's medical bills

while visting in nj, i was assulted by my boyfriend's aunt in august 2004. after the altercation i was brought to the hospital for x-rays of my finger, which was sprained in the incident. she was arrested, brought to the police station, and charged. i went back home soon after and had no way to get back there to go to court. the charges were dropped. now the hospital keeps calling me to pay the bill. can i still make her responsible for the medical bills? if so how? and can i still bring charges against her for assult because i live in another state and do not drive? p.s. the medical bills add up to approx. $4,000 if that makes a difference.
