Legal Question in Tax Law in New Jersey

Marriage & Taxes

I will be getting married shortly. If my husband to be owes back taxes on an old company he owned, does that make me liable for his taxes once we get married? Could they take from my house that is in my name and or bank accounts? If so, how do I protct myself?

Thanks

Re: Marriage & Taxes

You will NOT be liable for your future husband's past due taxes. Nevertheless, if you and he file joint returns, and there is a refund due, the IRS will keep the entire refund. It is difficult to fight for it back. Therefore, I suggest that you and your husband to be increase the number of exemptions on your W-4 to assure that no refund would be due.
