Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

A police officer gave my son a traffic ticket for driving my car with one of the headlights out. This happened in Northern New Jersey where we live. I know when I lived in New York City if you got a ticket there for the same thing, if you had it repaired within 24 hours and showed proof of the repair at the police station they forgave the ticket and the fine. Do they do the same thing in New Jersey? By the way, the police officer made the ticket out to me even though I was not in the car and my son was driving. Does that have any significance?

Hi and sorry I am not closer to you.

Anyway, it is not automatic that the ticket would be dropped if fixed within 24 hours.

If you ask for a hearing, you could ask the prosecutor at the time before court, and maybe they will give you a break. Since you are registered owner of the car, you would be primarily respoinsible for the safe condition of the car, while the driver should not be driving a car with a safety omission.

Do not ignore the ticket. I suggest you get the light replaced and send it to the court in question with a receipt and ask the court clerk if they would consider withdrawing prosecution. Who knows, maybe the Christmas spirit will prevail.
