In thousands of ways. Attorneys are constantly being called upon to help their clients calculate their "damages," which is the legal term for how much a person is asking for in court. Divorce attorneys must make calculations regarding the payment of spousal and child support. Criminal defense attorneys and prosecutors must make calculations regarding the length or expected length of sentences. Attorneys must also learn to understand the testimony of expert witnesses, and to help juries understand that testimony. Experts may rely extensively on mathematical computations in reaching their opinions. These are only some of the ways in which attorneys use mathematics in their work.
