Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in New York

2 years ago, I had a friend hold onto my diamond engagement ring and wedding band fear of my boyfriend hiding it on me. The friend and I have been on and off with speaking terms due to issues with my relationship with my boyfriend. I asked this friend to give me back my ring. She told me it was something I had to discuss with her husband. I contacted him and he said he gave it back to me which is a complete lie. I believe they have sold it out of spite or out of their financial issues. What can I do to retrieve my property or the value that is owed to me. there was no rush on getting it back because of the instability in my relationship. How do I go about getting this back?

You can try and sue. On Long Island, we have District Courts for 5-15K and, of course, everywhere has Small Claims court. NYC also has something similar so you can avoid going to regular Supreme Court. I personally would cross-examine him in court and the judge will decide. However, remember, the Plaintiff (suer) carries the burden of proof so it might be a tough case. If you are on Long Island, call me at (631) 848-1204
