Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New York

The university I attend charged myself along with 7 other people, charges for unknown damages regaurding a community living space. The space also serves as a hallway for 400 other people to walk through that live in the dormitory. I was told we would be billed because they cannot prove who actually did the "damages" but we live closest to the space so it is our responsibility. Is this charge fair and legal?

You should look in the student handbook for appeals procedures for challenging decisions made by lower level univerity employees. Normally universities have such provisions. If you are unsuccessful in this process, you may need to go to court to protect your rights.
