You were given an appearance ticket under CPL 150.10(1). You will have to appear in court on the date indicated on the appearance ticket. this is called the return date. on or before that date, the police officer who issued you the appearance ticket must file or cause to be filed, a sufficient accusatory instrument (the "paperwork"). on the return date the police should have filed either a complaint based upon information and belief establishing reasonable cause to believe you committed the offense charged or an information containing non-hearsay allegations establishing you committed all elements of the offense charged. If they serve on a complaint, you can demand it be converted to an information based upon non-hearsay. the appearance ticket should give you the section number of the charges against you. you should contact a lawyer.
