Legal Question in Criminal Law in New York

Reporting someone to the police hwo has an outstanding warrant

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, but I couldn't find anything in the search.

My daughter had a son with a man who ended up being an alcoholic and drug user and just all around bad guy. About a year ago he moved back to his home state of Alaska and we have not heard from him since.

While he was in Alaska, he was arrested twice that we are aware of. Both times he was released but after the second arrest he was ordered to return a week later to serve 20 days in jail. He then promptly left the town he was arrested in and never served the time. A week ago he contacted us and told us he was returning to NY to ''be a dad''. We know he also has other arrests in other states for various things like writing bad checks, etc.

My daughter is scared that he might hurt her and/or try to snatch her son.

So, my questions are: (a) if he has any warrants, will he be stopped at the airport when he tries to fly from alaska to ny? (b) if he is not stopped at the airport, can we call the police and alert them, and will they then arrest him on those outstanding warrants? (c) do we contact our local police?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Reporting someone to the police hwo has an outstanding warrant

I will try to answer all of your questions.

First, No he will probably not be stopped at the airport unless someone is doing a background check which are not usually done for domestic flights on low level criminals. If his is flying out of a Canadian airport it could be a possibility.

Second, you can call the police if you wish. Depending on the level of the crime and if there is an outstanding warrant they may or may not do something. On low level cases, many states will not bother to extridite a person which can be very expensive to send state police to transport him back to Alaska.

You may want to consult a local family attorney to bring an action if your daughter is so afraid of him.

I hope that is helpful.
