Legal Question in Family Law in New York

I am 17 and my parents have joint physical custody. I want to go to california and live/go to school there for my senior year. My girlfriend lives there and i would be living with her and her parents would get guardianship over me. My mom gave me permission to do this and my dad doesnt want me to go. Do i need both parents permission or just one?

The question is do they have joint LEGAL custody?

"Friendly" advice from someone who mentors law school interns (and it is bad out there for them too): Your Mom might think this is a great opportunity to see the world but your Dad may see it as a risky venture that could harm your future. Remember, it is a nasty world "out there" (meaning everywhere) and concentrating on HS studies, good grades, then good college and grades is the bare minimum these days to surviving. A grad degree, or even a law degree, might not even cut it without more. These days, you have to spend a LOT of time on interning and all kinds of things to buffer your transcripts; e.g. my law school interns have resumes that would knock your socks off and if they did not, they would have a heck of a time getting jobs once they finish the bar exam AND, the jobs they would get pay what I made in 1982 on Wall St going to night college AND they would have no benefits, unlike mine did. Health ins alone is a fortune. Just think about it.
