Do you need to have a lawyer if you are the custodial parent

No but then again as President Lincoln said, "the man who has himself as a lawyer, has an imbicile for a client."

If the other party is represented, you should be also. You are at a distinct disadvantage if you go up alone against these professionals.

If you are having financial difficulties, the court will assign and attorney to you.
