Legal Question in Family Law in New York

How to divorce an abusive spouse

I'm married 16 yrs. My husband is emotionally and verbally abusive toward me and our special needs son. He hides money for himself and maxed out and then defaulted using his own(not joint) credit card on hobbies. He frequents adult web sites which I recently blocked. I stay for the sake of our two boys and feel like I can't be near him as a wife anymore. I don't want to destroy the boys, but my trust is shattered as is my self-esteem. I'm a homemaker who has been out of the main workforce for 9 years despite working prior and having a BA degree. I'd like to ease into this slowly because I'm scared of how he'll react. PS-He is in law enforcement(has a pistol locked away) so that whole idea intimidates me too. Any ideas due to having an autistic/bipolar child and how to protect him, my younger son and myself from the ''process'' of divorce in the least dramatic/damaging way? thank you
