Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Can I file divorce papers with the court without a lawyer if the divorce is contested? Would the judge then decide who gets what? I understand that it's best to have an attorney but can I?

There is no legal requirement that you use an attorney. But the likelihood of your case actually going to trial is small.
