Legal Question in Family Law in New York

My husband hit me the other day. I called the police and he was removed from our home for the night. I have decided I am going to seek a divorce, but have no income to do it. I have never worked since our marriage almost 5 years ago. In the meantime, we are attempting to reside in the same house and act civally toward one another. His parents came and took our car which is in his name. I am now stuck at home with no way to even go to the store. Can he do this legally? I have medical issues and need to be able to get to the Doctors, hospital, etc. should I need to go.

HURRY UP AND CALL ONE OF THE GROUPS THAT HELPS BATTERED WOMEN. Normally, I tell people w/o funds to seek one of the pro bono services by you. Don't forget law schools and bar associations (e.g. Erie County BA). I am talking NOW.
