Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Legal Rights

My husband and I have been together for 13 years married for 3 years out of the 13. He has a 19 year old daughter and a 16 yr old son from his previous marriage. He decided to rent an apartment for his daughter without first discussing it with me now he is sleeping at the apartment every night. His 16 year old son is left at the apartment with me who is currently on probation. My husbadn is not telling me that I have to contribute to the rent at our apartment or else I will have to give up the apartment and find a smaller place since he cannot managed the two rents. I had a private investigator run an bank account check on him and found out that at the present time he has sufficient fund to pay both rents. What is my legal rights here. My husband does nor discuss his finances with me and my salary does not allow me to contribute towards the rent seeing that I am already responsible for paying the telephone and con edison bill and the heat bill will be added to that at the end of this month. He is not a person that I can reason with. If I declare to him that I know of his financial status, he is going to get angry and refuse to communicate with me.

Re: Legal Rights

I hope you see all the red flags.

He is supporting his 19 year old and telling you to downsize or pay up?

He's sleeping at his daughters and not at home?

You are married 3 years yet needed a PI to find out what his finances are?

Most importantly...if you confront him he will get angry and give you the silent treatment?

Unfortunately, you have alot more troubles than just paying the rent. But, you probably know this.

Re: Legal Rights

You really do not have many legal rights as far as him paying the rent. If you file for divorce, then you would probably not be entitled to maintenance (alimony) since you were only married for 3 years.
