marriage and children
If I am not married to the woman
who is having my child do I need to
legally adopt in order to be
considered the father by New York
State?

No you do not go through an adoption, you and she can admit to paternity and she names you on the birth certificate. Otherwise you have to bring a paternity suit, get dna testing and become named as the father.
