Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Singnature vs. Initials

Are initials a valid subtitute for a signature? A judical order for divorce was created but there is no signature of the judge - only initials.

Is a signature required? It seems that it would be/should be. This document might be invalid due to the improper execution.

thank you

Re: Singnature vs. Initials

I have never heard of this issue before. However, I would think that Judge only has to make a mark to acknowledge his acceptance or intent.

Re: Singnature vs. Initials

It's not uncommon for a judge to merely initial an order instead of affixing a full signature. If it was properly entered by the County Clerk and Notice of Entry was properly served, there should be no problem.
