Legal Question in Family Law in New York

Son is 54 and has passed away

I received a call yesterday that my son who is 54 has passed away. He has been living with his girlfriend for the past 4 years and is estranged from the family for years. It seems that the hopspital will only release him to family, but since he has no relationship with his family (and his family has no money), who is responsible for having him released from the hospital and who is responsible for his funeral arrangements and cost?

Funeral cost is the responsibility of the estate. In other words, if he had money or assets (estate), a portion of the money or assets would be used for his funeral.

In terms of responsibility, no person or government can force you to get involved with this issue if you do not want to get involved.

Mike.
