Legal Question in Employment Law in New York

I recently made an entry error in the cash registerat the restaurant i work at, which resulted in a shortage of $17 in the cash drawer. They employer is requiring that I pay it back. howver, the moeny was not there to begin with, so why should I be charged? I forgot to put a note in the drawer about the entry error. Is it legal in NY to charge restaurant employees for damages or loss?
