Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

who should i take to small claims court?

A girl i used to live with wanted to keep the apt after my lease was up and i moved out. she didnt have the money for first months rent and the deposit. i told her that she could pay me the $475 deposit and the landlord would count my deposit as hers. she paid me 300 then stopped taking my calls and avoided me al all costs. After i moved out i found over $100 worth of movies had been stolen out of the moving boxes i had them in. the land lord was very nice about helping me to get ahold of her but when i mentioned going to the police about the matter or having the landlord pay me the difference she started avoiding me too. i never signed anything signing my deposit over to the girl and the landlord told me she never gave them a reciept or anything saying they had given her a deposit. should i go after the girl for the money she owes me plus extra for things she stole from me and stress or should i go after the landlord for my entire deposit back? also it has been suggested to me as i still have the keys to the apt that it would be legal for me to go there and get my possesions as the landlord informed me they still havent given her a signed copy of the lease is this true?
