If I am a guarantor for my brother's NYC lease, can that possibly affect my ability to buy property?

It should not affect your ability to buy property if no legal action was ever taken against your brother for his failure to comply with the lease terms. The guarantee is a side agreement that no one would know about unless it was enforced.
