Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

My question is kinda complicated. I have a dog which my ex girlfriend is tryin to keep from me I had the dog before me and her ever met. Have the receipt for the dog still copies of vet bills paid by me before me and my exgirlfriend ever met. Well she had him one day while we were together and he ran off on her she never told me this was the case she just told me she had him at her house come to find out she had lost him and he was picked up by the dog catcher. Instead of telling me she found him at one of the local pounds and told them he was her dog and registered him in her name. Also she registered him to an address she wasn't living at the time because she was living with me come to find out she registered him to her exboyfriends address. We have since broke up and she took off with the dog and is tryin to hide him from me. I have proof that she was living with me at the time she registered him as well as proof I bought the dog before we met. I have numerous ppl who are wiling to sat the dog is mine of which is my roomate at the time I purchased the dog and the person that bought my money to the breeder for me who also purchased a dog from the same litter. What can I do to get my dog back

I practice animal law-see www.Carolryderlaw.com because there is a great deal of info on this subject on the website. I also conduct seminars on animal law-one format for the general public and one for law students at Touro Law School. If any group on LI wants me to speak, I will come-I just need a room, preferably with a Powerpoint set-up.

I am sorry to hear about what you are going through-I have done pet custody cases and even though I won every one, and my job is to zealously represent my client, sometimes, it was almost as heartbreaking for me as it was for the person I had to take the pet from. In short, animals are property. You could speak with the DA about this "theft" of property but they probably will say this is a civil matter (too busy to do the right thing by animals-my interns and I are working on that) and thus you would need to go to court. Sm Claims court only has jurisdiction up to $5K in MONEY. I can do what I have done before, successfully and without having to go to court, which is draft a letter to the defendant. We can do this by e-mail and mail if you are far away from Suffolk County. Call me at (631) 848-1204 to discuss.
