Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I sold a building 5 years ago and I held the mortgage. The purchaser never paid the taxes, so the tax liens were purchased. The new owner told the purchaser that my mortgage is null and void. My question is- is there a statute of limitations on my mortgage? Can someone just declare my mortgage invalid if it is not satisfied. thank you for your response
