Legal Question in Tax Law in New York

Irs request for payment

My wife and I filed separate returns in 2005. She passed away in 2006. I filed her return for 2006. The IRS send a letter in both our names but only her SSN shown stating that money is owed for the year 2005. Am I responsible for this debt?

Re: Irs request for payment

You are not personally responsible for the payment of taxes arising from income tax return which you did not sign (or authorized someone to sign on your behalf). Your wife' estate is responsible, to the extent of its assets, for the payment of income tax for income tax returns she file, individually.
