Legal Question in Traffic Law in New York

options for old ticket with possible bench warrant

I wanted to know what options there are for several old traffic tickets & a possible bench warrant. The tickets were for unlicened & uninsured opperation of a vehicle. I'm concerned mostly about if there would be jail time involed since I am a student, married & living on a tight income. I have appeared once already for the tickets but not after that. I'm looking to clear this up because I've come into a little extra $$ & I am going to need a car for my intrenship & thus a license. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: options for old ticket with possible bench warrant

It all depends on the nature of the AUO ....in other words, the nature of the suspension, etc. Go to motor vehicle or try them on line at http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/driverabstract/default.html and get a copy of your driving abstract. It will cost you a few bucks but well worth it. Take it to an attorney because the AUO is a misdemeanor which, by itself, can mean up to a year in the county jail. If there is a bench waranant, it can be more annoying.

Good Luck

PS-motor vehicle only knows the abstract is ordered - not necessarily by you.
