Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Locating and claiming some money.

My mother died last year and she did not have a will. My sisters and I happen to know that my mother had some money saved in some kind of financial instution (credit union) from the years she worked for the state. We don't know which instution we tried calling the local credit unions with no luck. Important documents were lost in a fire. How can we locate and claim this money? And how would we split this money up since there was no will?. Thank You.

Re: Locating and claiming some money.

1. Obtain a copy of her tax return from IRS or NYS. That should have the info.

2. Contact her last employer. They may have info.

3. Eventually the State of NY will get the abandoned account. Contact them.

4. All Children share equally. Good luck.
