Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

Locating Life Insurance

My father passed away a year ago at age 74 and my sister & I strongly suspect he had a life insurance policy, however we have dug through everything and can't find any papers of any life insurance policy, he might have thrown the policy papers in the trash by accident. My question is if there is any resource where a person could enter a Name, SS# or DOB and a life insurance policy (if any) would show up, or what would be a way to investigate this?

Re: Locating Life Insurance

Unless it was a paid-up policy (no further premiums due), watch the mail for a bill or other communications. Did you check his past year's checking account to see if a check was issued to pay premiums? Only other way is to shot-gun letters to all major life insurance companies to see if has/had a policy with them. When writing, give them his name, address and social security number and a photocopy of any court appointment you have.
