Probate or Family Law question
My minor son is the beneficiary of some financial assets left by my recently deceased mother. One bank where he is the sole beneficiary of a CD with less than 5K has indicated that I must go to surrogate court to get a document indicating that I am my son's guardian. Is this costly & routine? And can I do this without an attorney?

It's not that costly and you can try to do it yourself. The court clerks will be very helpful.You might want to find out if the funds can be transferred to you under the uniform transfers to minors act.

You may be able to get yourself appointed "Guardian of the Property" without the assitance of an attorney. I suggest that you take a trip to the Surrogate's Court for the county in which you reside and ask questions.
