Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

responsibililty of lawyer to carry out will instructions

A year ago, a close friend stated he was emending his will to include me as a beneficiary. He died last week. I spoke with his lawyer. I asked the lawyer about how matters would proceed. He said he would have to locate the will (but wasn't sure if he could). He said I should contact him in several months. Why would this matter take so long? What happens if no will is found and the deceased has no blood relatives?

Thanks.

If there is no Will the property passes by the laws of intestate distribution.

Seversal months is a long time to wait to learn if there is a Will. If a Will is found and you are named as a beneficiary then you will receive written notice of the probate proceeding.

You can contact other lawyers the deceased may have used to ascerain if there is a Will
