Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New York

wills

i was left money from my friends grandmother when she passed away,my friends mother said she needed my birth certificate and social security card for the lawyer who was in charge,i never got any of the money,she said the will was burned up in a house fire,how can i find out what happened with the whole probate mess?

Check the Surrogate's Court of the County where your grandmother resided to see the status of the case. What is your basis for believing that she left you money?

If the original Will was destroyed, and no copy exists to allow an Administration with the will annexed, which can be checked with the Surrogate of the County where the person resided at her time of death, I suspect you may be or become the victim of identity theft, and this should be looked into. I have never heard that birth certificates and/or social security cards are needed by an estate attorney to pay a bequest under a Will. If you know what County the Grandmother lived in when she passed away you can check on the probate of her Estate with the Surrogate's Court

Check this out at the Surrogates Court in the county of her residence to see if the will was ever probated.
