In New York there is rarely a formal reading, but everyone mentioned in a will is entitled to notice.

I agree that formal readings are in the movies and novels, but rarely occur in real life. All people named are advised of the probate and usually provided a copy of the Will. If not provided a copy, one can be obtained from the Surrogate where it was probated, for a small fee.
