Check with the defender's office to see whether you can get appointed counsel. Certainly, if you're way over your head (and that's not hard to be!), you need legal representation. Even if you can't get free legal counsel, check with law school legal clinics and legal aid bureaus for referrals. They might not be able to help you on a criminal case, but often there are resource lists and stuff online for North Carolina.
