Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in North Carolina

I had a collections office, (said it was a law office) to call me about a debt from approx. 15 years ago. They wanted me to post date 5 checks so I can make monthly payments. I told them I am unemployed and they are forcing me to go to friends and family for money. I can't. What can they do to me for refusal to pay. I am not refusing to pay, just can't pay lump sum. I offered $50 monthly, but they stated I would have to post date 5 checks 2-$100 and 3-$50 checks. I refused to post date.

What are my options and/or legal ramifications?

If you haven't made a payment for 15 years, you probably are not legally obligated to pay under the staute of limitations. Contact an attorney for advice in your specific situation.
