Legal Question in Criminal Law in North Carolina

Auto Theft

Two years ago three vehicles were taken from the property that I was renting at the time by my landlord. He did not have any claim to them and they were solely titled in my name. He took them and would not return them until I paid him rent that I owed him. I had to go to Civil court and won judgement against him for a '' Self Help Eviction''. I would like to know why his taking of my vehicles was not Grand Larceny, or why it is. I was told by our local Sheriffs Dept. that it was larceny, but the City Police do not seem to want to pursue it. I think it is because of my former landlords political affiliations is the reason. I have recently learned that the original Police report has dissapeared from the Police station. If possible I would appreciate some idea of what can be done about this situation.

Thank you;

Re: Auto Theft

The district attorney determines the charge that he believes he can best secure a convition on. Unauthorized use of a motor-propelled conveyance is probably the most he could have been convicted of-maybe. However, since he took your cars for past rent due, I believe this would be more of a Self Help Eviction type action.
