is it legal for my mother in law to share her prescriptions with her son?

You do not indicate what the prescription is for or why it was prescribed. If its for say, a penicillin drug because the son has an infection, nobody will know necessarily. If this is for a narcotic, there are records and the pharmacist keeps records. If your mother needs the drug and she comes up short for the number of days, then the pharmicist and doctor are going to wonder what your mother is doing with her medication.

Using common sense, your mother and her son are two different people and nobody should take prescription meds without first being seen by a doctor. There are too many variables and the son's ingestion of the mother's pills may cause death or serious illness. She should not do it.
