Legal Question in Family Law in North Carolina

My adult brother from another state has moved in with our Sister and is now under hospice care after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He wants to straighten out his affairs but does not know if he is still married to his wife (they have been apart for several years.) He has lived with his girlfriend in NY for many many years. As I said before he now resides in NC. Where does he begin to figure this out since he does not even know where his former wife lives?
