my father is a legal residence and i am visiting, how do i become a obtain a green card

Your father can file a petition for you but the waiting time to file papers to immigrate will be years if you're over 21 and unmarried (at least 8 years). In the meantime, since the tourist visa is only good for six months plus six months extension at most, you would have to find another temporary visa to maintain status or go back home. You would not want to be out-of-status.

If you have a U.S. citizen spouse or a citizen child over 21 petition for you, then you would not have to wit the years above, and would be able to get the green card much more quickly.

I meant to say in my second paragraph above: "If you have a U.S. citizen spouse or a citizen child over 21 petition for you, then you would not have to wait the years above..."
