Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Ohio

Money given to a son before death

When my husband's mother found out she was terminally ill, she wrote a personal check to my husband for what was left in her checking account, about $5500, so he could take care of some outstanding bills of hers. She died without life insurance and what was left of the money was used toward her funeral expenses. Is there any way the money she gave him would have to go through probate if it was a ''gift'' to her son aprox. 6 weeks before her death?
