My brother is a permanent resident of United State but he has been out of the country for almost 2 years is there anyway he can still come back on his green card?

Unfortunately, it is very possible that he had lost his residency by abandonment. What he was doing abroad for so long? Did he apply for anything with the USCIS before leaving the country? How he obtained his residency, through whom and when (how long ago)?
