if someone is calling your house and threatening you do you have the right to put a recorder on your phone and tape the conversation

No, this falls under 18 PA Consolidated Statutes 5701 and following sections, the wire tap law.

However, the person making such threats may be guilty of Terroristic Threats, a misdemeanor.

Given that your best course of action is to notify the police and let them handle it.

No, you may not tape conversations on the phone, unless the people you are taping are aware of it and consent.

If someone is calling and threatening you, I would suggest a few things. Do you know who they are? If not, get caller i.d., or, call the phone company and get them to put a trace on your line. In order to do so, you'll have to agree to prosecute.

Second, call the police and tell them what's going on, and let them get authorization to tape the conversations on your line.
