You need not pay the registration fee to get it copyrighted. It is copyrighted from the moment you create it -- explore www.copyright.gov for more information. Registration is a prerequisite to file suit for copyright infringement, but it is not required to be copyrighted.

Any attorney will say that to assert copyright protection is relatively easy. Use the standard c within a circle (or the words "copyright"), followed by the year of publication, followed by your name (the copyright author). Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
