Can a landlord sell property without notifing the tenants prior to the sell?

Yes, they can. However, the landlord had to disclosed that there were leaseholds on the property.

You should see what your lease says about the property being sold. Some leases contain language as to what happens in case the property is sold.

If it does then the language of the lease most likely controls. If it doesn't then most likely the new owner takes over the leases associated with the property.
